You can clearly see he hasn’t stood upright in a long time. His spine must be negotiating a shameful surrender. The room smells like giving up. The kind of setting where the walls would want to peel themselves off just to stop having to watch the spectacle. The lamp behind him dangles like a last still-connected neuron, but one that is seriously considering resigning. And him… He holds his pipe as if it were a parachute. A poor little thing that still pretends it can hold him back even though he has already been falling for years.
